Valve Classification
Valves are widely used and come in a great variety. They can be broadly classified into two main categories: automatic valves that operate automatically by the inherent energy of the process fluid, such as check valves, safety valves, control valves, steam traps, and pressure-reducing valves; and actuated valves that are operated manually, electrically, hydraulically, or pneumatically, including gate valves, globe valves, throttling valves, butterfly valves, ball valves, and plug valves. In addition, valves can be further subdivided along multiple dimensions. Based on the relative motion of the closing member with respect to the valve seat, they can be categorized as follows: slide-type valves in which the closing member moves parallel to the valve seat center; gate-type valves in which the closing member moves perpendicular to the valve seat center; plug and ball valves in which the closing member rotates about its own axis—either as a plunger or as a sphere; swing-type valves in which the closing member pivots about an external axis relative to the valve seat; disc-type valves in which the closing member rotates about an internal axis relative to the valve seat; and slide-type valves in which the closing member slides perpendicular to the flow path. By function, valves can be divided into shut-off valves for connecting or isolating the process fluid in the pipeline; check valves for preventing backflow of the process fluid; control valves for regulating fluid pressure and flow; distribution valves for changing the flow direction and allocation of the fluid; safety valves for relieving excess fluid under overpressure to ensure system safety; as well as special-purpose valves such as steam traps, vent valves, and drain valves.
According to the mode of actuation, valves can be classified as manual valves driven by handwheels, handles, or other manual means and optionally equipped with worm-gear reduction units; electric valves actuated by electric motors or electrical devices; hydraulic valves actuated by water or oil; and pneumatic valves actuated by compressed air. According to nominal pressure, they can be categorized as vacuum valves with an absolute pressure of less than 0.1 MPa; low-pressure valves with a nominal pressure not exceeding 1.6 MPa; medium-pressure valves with a nominal pressure ranging from 2.5 to 6.4 MPa; high-pressure valves with a nominal pressure between 10.0 and 80.0 MPa; and ultra-high-pressure valves with a nominal pressure of 100.0 MPa or more. According to the temperature of the working medium, they can be divided into ordinary valves suitable for temperatures from –40°C to 425°C; high-temperature valves for 425°C to 600°C; heat-resistant valves for temperatures above 600°C; low-temperature valves for –40°C to 150°C; and cryogenic valves for temperatures below –150°C. According to nominal bore, they can be classified as small-bore valves with a nominal bore less than 40 mm; medium-bore valves with a nominal bore of 50 to 300 mm; large-bore valves with a nominal bore of 350 to 1,200 mm; and extra-large-bore valves with a nominal bore of 1,400 mm or more.
Safety Valve Category
Safety valves are primarily used for overpressure protection of process media and encompass a wide variety of types. Based on the medium temperature, they can be classified as high-temperature valves for temperatures above 450°C, medium-temperature valves for 120°C to 450°C, ambient-temperature valves for 40°C to 120°C, low-temperature valves for –40°C to –100°C, and ultra-low-temperature valves for below –100°C. According to the valve body material, they can be divided into non-metallic valves made of ceramics, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, and plastics; metallic valves made of copper alloys, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, Monel alloys, cast iron, carbon steel, cast steel, low-alloy steel, and high-alloy steel; and metallic valves with linings such as lead lining, plastic lining, or enamel lining.
